The Formula One in schools programme is a great scheme running through the back of Lincoln UTC. It builds on team work, problem solving and strategy bound within the theories of physics, engineering, design and technology.

On a Thursday afternoon Lincoln UTC pause their usual working day for an hour off to partake in sport and other courses. Year 10’s and 11’s leave the building to take on Rugby, Football, Squash, Dance and Invasion Games to name but a few.

Year 12’s and 13’s have further options. While some follow groups into classes and games, others remain at the UTC to begin projects outside of their curriculum. Each week Lincoln UTC is met with expanding project ideas as groups have formed with common goals. This week Lincoln UTC introduces team Dakota, seven students in Year 12 and 13 have formed role including design, engineering and budget management. To model the make-up and criteria of the F1 team the students have one aim to build the fastest Formula One Car to cross the finishing line.

Team Dakota met with the Marketing Officer Holly Pickering this week to discuss their ideas for partnership and sponsorship from businesses. Holly said: “the team have been developing a strong branding concept and strategy. They are hoping to secure strong business support, to gain the experience of launching and developing a project netted to a firm business plan. The F1 project does more than strengthens team work and communication skills. It allows young people to develop their ideas and have confidence in their plan; that life skill is an amazing skill to learn. It is a privilege to watch a group develop all those skills at Lincoln UTC.”

More details on further projects and Team Dakota will follow.
