GCSE Results Day 2018

Lincoln UTC Students Excel In School’s Specialist GCSE Subjects

August 23, 2018 10:49 am

Students at Lincoln University Technical College (UTC) have achieved excellent results in the school’s specialist subjects.

Students taking GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics achieved an 85% pass rate, with a third of students (33%) achieving a 7 to 9 grade (equivalent to the old A and A* grades). In Mathematics 84% of students passed with 74% passing Engineering. 69% of students passed both their GCSE English and Mathematics, which is significantly higher than last year’s national average of 59%.

“We are very pleased for our students who have achieved excellent and very well-deserved GCSE results this year,” says John Morrison, Principal of Lincoln UTC. “The students and the teaching team have worked very hard, and we look forward to seeing many of our students returning to the UTC next academic year to start their A Levels and BTEC studies with us.”

Paul Birt, Chair of Lincoln UTC’s Board of Governors, says: “It has been another tremendous year for Lincoln UTC and its students. The way GCSEs are graded changed radically last year and now the threshold for the new grade 9 is very high. A grade 9 is much harder to achieve than the old A*. Nationally the expectation is that only one-fifth of the students who might have achieved an old A or A* grade would reach the new grade 9. So, to have a third of students securing a 7 to 9 grade in our specialist area of science is tremendous. We are also very proud of our students’ performance in our other key areas as well as English and Maths.

“I would like to thank our excellent staff for their dedication and inspiration while congratulating our students on their results.

“We would particularly like to congratulate Jay Goldsmith-Wyatt, who was awarded grade 9 in all three of his sciences, biology, chemistry and physics, something only a handful of students in the entire country will have achieved.”

Unlike other schools offering GCSEs, A Levels and BTECs, Lincoln UTC is still accepting applications for the 2018/19 academic year. Students interested in studying at Lincoln’s specialist Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics school should phone 01522 775990 or email enquiries@lincolnutc.co.uk.

Opened in 2014, Lincoln UTC admits up to 160 students into Year 10 and Year 12 each academic year. There are no entry requirements for entry into Year 10, but students must have a keen interest in Engineering and/or Science and a desire to combine practical, technical and academic modes of study. Entry requirements for Year 12 courses can be found at www.lincolnutc.co.uk.
