Lincoln UTC Students In Wonderland As They Become Published Authors

Twenty young writers from Lincoln UTC will become published authors early next year, when their creative writing appears in a new anthology of short stories.

The students were some of the 18,000 school children to enter a national competition, organised by Young Writers.

The challenge was to pen a story in 100 words or less inspired by the theme of the compendium’s title – Welcome to Wonderland.

All of Lincoln UTC’s Year 11 students submitted a mini saga to Young Writers.

A team of judges has read all 18,000 entries, selecting the best stories for inclusion in the book which will be published in January 2018.

All of the 20 stories selected from the 54 submitted by Lincoln UTC, have everything that the editors believe makes a good story says Daisy Job of Young Writers: “To achieve our aim of encouraging young writers to enjoy creative writing, our editorial policy takes a broad view of what makes a good story: imagination and creativity are taken into account as well as originality and use of language.”

Lincoln UTC’s Head of English, Kennedy Taylor-Camm, is delighted with the school’s achievement: “We are known as a specialist science, technology, engineering and mathematics school, but an excellent command of the English language underpins these areas. We work very hard with students in both English Language and English Literature and have achieved some excellent exam results in these subjects. The Young Writers’ competition is incredibly popular and very challenging – writing a short story, in just 100 hundred words, with a middle, beginning and end, and an engaging plot is very difficult indeed. To have 20 mini sagas selected for publication is incredible and I’m extremely proud of the group. We can’t wait to see the compendium when it comes out.”

Welcome to Wonderland – Sagas from the Midlands, featuring the 20 Lincoln UTC stories will be published on 31st January, priced £15.99, at which point the students will find out if their entries were judged to be in the top five and be further rewarded with a Kindle Fire HD. The school with the best set of entries will receive £1,000.

Opened in 2014 and based in an £8m learning facility, Lincoln UTC is a specialist college educating 14 to 18 year olds in core subjects including Mathematics and English alongside specialist studies in Engineering and Science. Supported by the University of Lincoln, Siemens and a range of Lincolnshire businesses, up to 160 students are admitted into Year 10 and Year 12 each academic year.

This summer, 97% of A Level students secured a university place and 84% of candidates passed nine or more GCSEs, with 70% achieving at least five A* to C grades, including Maths and English.
