Preparing for the Lincolnshire Show

The Lincolnshire Show is not far away and two groups of Lincoln UTC students are busy preparing for it.

The 11 Year 10 Triple Science students are taking part in a schools challenge organised by the Lincolnshire Education Business Partnership.

One of group of five students has assumed the role of a flood response team and looking into why flooding occurs and how we can work to prevent it. The students are researching, planning and making a model home and surrounding land that can withstand the effects of flooding. They’re working with the Association of Drainage Boards on their plan, which has involved the development of a mechanical way of moving water away from a house on a hill. Their plan will be on display on the EBP’s stand at the Lincolnshire Show.

The second group of students is tackling the EBP’s Great Gardening Challenge, which sees them research, design and create a miniature show garden (similar to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Working closely with Willows Garden Centre and Restaurant, the garden has to fit into a pallet measuring 60 x 47 inches. The aim of their garden is to inspire other people to get growing and to highlight the importance of attracting wildlife, such as bees, to gardens. As well as creating the garden in time for the Lincolnshire Show, the group is keeping a record of the research and learning they’ve undertaken and how this is influencing their design.

The Lincolnshire Show takes place on 21st and 22nd June and more details about the EBP’s schools’ challenge can be found here: http://www.the-ebp.co.uk/potential-for-growth.
