Work Experience: Developing Talent

At Lincoln UTC, preparation for work experience begins well before a student enters the workplace. For our Year 10 and Year 12 learners, it is an opportunity to explore ambitions, recognise strengths and develop the confidence to engage with employers.

We place real importance on the whole process: researching opportunities, preparing a CV, writing an application, making telephone calls and developing interview skills. Each step gives students practical experience of the communication, organisation and initiative they will need beyond college.

Prepare with purpose

Organisation and persistence are central to securing an opportunity. Students learn to record employer contacts, track responses and plan follow-up actions. Our field manual models the use of a simple spreadsheet to keep this process manageable and purposeful.

Learners are encouraged to follow up politely, respond professionally and explore alternatives when an organisation cannot help. This develops independence and resilience, supported by the college’s placement team.

Work experience then brings classroom learning into context. Encountering workplace expectations helps students understand the importance of reliability, teamwork, communication and safe working. It can strengthen an existing ambition or introduce a direction they had not previously considered.

Our aim is for students to move forward with greater confidence, a clearer understanding of their strengths and a stronger sense of purpose in their education—building the foundations for industry readiness and their next step beyond Lincoln UTC.

Communicate with confidence

A meaningful placement starts with thoughtful preparation. Students explore their interests, research suitable employers and consider how different workplaces connect with their studies and future aspirations.

Developing a CV helps learners recognise the skills they already have, drawing on projects, practical work, responsibilities and achievements. Writing a letter of application encourages them to explain why an organisation interests them and what they could contribute. These activities help students present themselves clearly and understand the value of their learning.

Build readiness

Contacting an employer can feel daunting. Our approach gives students practical guidance while encouraging them to take an active role.

Telephone preparation helps learners introduce themselves, ask for the right person, explain their interests and agree a next step. Professional emails build on these conversations, with an emphasis on clear language, accurate details and a message tailored to the employer.

Interview preparation develops the ability to discuss strengths, give examples, listen carefully and ask thoughtful questions. Through practice, students become more confident in communicating with adults in professional settings—skills they can carry into future applications for employment, apprenticeships and university.

In developing these skills, Lincoln UTC student are more confidence, more capable and more prepared for real work opportunities. Whilst students often find the notion of work experience challenging to begin with, the journey of discovery that they embark on, often opens opportunities that they could not have foreseen, prior to the start of the process. Many of our students start their work experience position and impress their employer so much, that they are invited back to do further longer work experiences placements, or are offered part time jobs! This is not an unusual outcome!
