Enrichment Opportunities
Our approach to life guidance and PSHE is centered on providing our students with the widest range of meaningful opportunities possible.
For example, rather than simply learning about other faiths we visit a local mosque to speak to the Imam. All of key stage 4 take part in team building and communication workshops with the RAF. When participating in the Royal Navy Engineering Challenge, students travel to Portsmouth and stay overnight on a battleship at HMS Sultan.
Lincoln UTC is a very small college, but there is nothing small about the ambition or scope of our programme of international trips. We are committed to giving our students huge and life changing chances to see the world and experience different cultures.
In recent years we have completed visits to Austria, Poland, France, Germany, Italy and Hong Kong.
This year, amongst the many trips and visits that are commonplace every week…
Our annual exchange with a partner technical college in Hong Kong gives Lincoln UTC students the opportunity to discover a different culture, develop new skills and build friendships across continents. Students travel to Hong Kong and welcome their exchange partners to Lincoln, sharing practical learning, creative projects and cultural experiences. During our visitors’ eight-day stay, activities ranged from engineering workshops, stained glass and model-making to exploring Nottingham Trent University, Lincoln Cathedral, York and Skegness. This two-way exchange brings learning to life, encouraging independence, confidence and curiosity while broadening students’ understanding of the world and the possibilities within it.
Our ski trip to Schneebärenland, Austria, gives Lincoln UTC students the opportunity to experience spectacular mountain scenery, embrace new challenges and make lasting memories together. Away from the classroom, time on the slopes encourages confidence, resilience and independence, while sharing the adventure strengthens friendships. With crisp Alpine air and a different culture to discover, the trip is an exciting part of our commitment to broadening students’ horizons. A further ski trip is planned for 2027, offering another opportunity for students to join the adventure.
Lincoln UTC is beginning a partnership with Tafi-Atome DA Junior School in Ghana, raising funds to support its school community and improve its learning environment. Established in 1965, the school serves around 80 students, the majority of whom are girls, with three classrooms and a small staffroom in need of repair. Our ambition is to build a lasting relationship founded on shared learning, cultural understanding and mutual respect. As the partnership develops, we hope to give our students the opportunity to visit, exchange experiences and learn alongside their Ghanaian peers—broadening horizons and working together to make a meaningful, lasting difference.
A visit to the Houses of Parliament and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office gave Lincoln UTC students a memorable insight into government and international diplomacy. Alongside fascinating tours of these historic buildings, students met Hamish Falconer and Dr Bryony Mathew, asking questions and hearing first-hand about their work. Bringing democracy and public service to life, the experience encouraged curiosity, confident discussion and a broader understanding of Britain’s place in the world—showing students how their own ambitions could reach far beyond the classroom.
Our annual Outward Bound experience takes Lincoln UTC students into the Welsh outdoors to discover what they can achieve beyond the classroom. Through adventures such as canoeing, walking and scrambling over rocky terrain, students learn to support one another, communicate clearly and persevere when challenges feel unfamiliar. The Outward Bound Trust’s approach uses outdoor learning to develop confidence, resilience and self-belief. For our students, it is an opportunity to strengthen friendships, grow in independence and return with lasting memories—and greater confidence to tackle their next challenge.
From the workshop to the racetrack, Greenpower brings engineering to life at Lincoln UTC. Our students take part in an international electric-car challenge, applying practical skills as they prepare their vehicle and compete at race meetings throughout the season. Building, testing and refining the car encourages creative problem-solving, while pit preparation and racing demand teamwork, clear communication and determination. It is an exciting opportunity to connect classroom learning with a real engineering challenge, explore electric mobility and experience the satisfaction of working towards a shared goal.
Our recent Royal Navy Engineering Challenge to Portsmouth, gave Lincoln UTC students an exciting opportunity to connect their technical interests with the world of naval engineering. The trip to HMS Sultan combined participation in the challenge with an overnight stay, encouraging independence and giving students interested in military careers a wider perspective on their future possibilities. Taking engineering beyond the classroom, the experience encourages practical problem-solving, teamwork and determination. It is a memorable opportunity to explore how STEM skills can lead to challenging and rewarding careers, while building confidence alongside fellow students.
Our Strong Girl initiative supports the confidence and mental wellbeing of female students at Lincoln UTC through our developing partnership with Lincoln-based Strong Girl Squad. Guided strength-training sessions offer an encouraging space to try something new, recognise personal progress and build supportive connections. With an emphasis on effort, safe technique and what their bodies can achieve, students are encouraged to develop a positive relationship with physical activity and greater belief in themselves. This reflects our commitment to personal development: helping young people feel valued, connected and confident enough to embrace new challenges, both within college and beyond.
English literature is brought to life at Lincoln UTC, with visits to the theatre, giving students the opportunity to experience the texts they study through professional performance. A recent visit to see Othello at London’s Theatre Royal Haymarket allowed our A Level students to explore Shakespeare’s powerful themes of jealousy, manipulation and betrayal on a West End stage. Seeing how actors interpret language, character and dramatic tension deepened their understanding and sparked thoughtful discussion beyond the classroom. These shared cultural experiences broaden horizons, encourage independent interpretations and nurture a lasting appreciation of literature and live theatre.
Our LEGO and Chess Clubs give Lincoln UTC students space to unwind, share interests and enjoy a different kind of challenge. LEGO building combines imagination with hands-on construction, encouraging students to explore shapes, test ideas and improve their designs. Chess offers the pleasure of friendly competition while inviting players to spot patterns, weigh up choices and think several moves ahead. Both activities provide opportunities to practise patience, concentration and creative problem-solving—habits that connect naturally with science, technology, engineering and maths. Whether building something unexpected or finding a clever move, students can enjoy learning together and discovering what they can do.
