GCSE Art & Design — Your ideas. Your imagination. Your creative voice.
At Lincoln UTC, GCSE Art & Design gives you the opportunity to explore your interests, develop practical skills and discover your own creative voice. From your first sketches to a finished artwork, you’ll learn how to turn observations, research and imagination into something personal.
You’ll explore painting, drawing, sculpture, mixed media and digital approaches, taking inspiration from Renaissance artists through to contemporary practitioners. Discover how artists communicate ideas, challenge expectations and respond to the world—and use those discoveries to inform your own work.
Your interests matter. Architecture, fashion, engineering, nature, identity and the issues you care about can all inspire your practice. We encourage curiosity, experimentation and thoughtful creative risks as you develop confidence with materials and techniques.
Alongside your artistic skills, you’ll build independence, time management and the ability to explain and evaluate your decisions. These strengths support further creative study and have value across a wide range of industries.
How you are assessed
Your portfolio contributes 60% of your GCSE and demonstrates your development through practical projects. The externally set assignment contributes 40%: you respond to an AQA starting point through preparatory studies, followed by 10 hours of supervised work.
Across both components, you’ll develop ideas, experiment and refine, record your thinking, and create personal responses.
AO1 & AO2 — Discover inspiration. Explore the possibilities.
AO1: Develop your ideas
Explore artists, designers and other sources that spark your curiosity. Look closely at their choices, meanings and methods, then use what you discover to develop your own ideas. Research becomes useful when you explain the connections to your work.
AO2: Experiment and refine
Try different materials, techniques and approaches. Compare your experiments, identify what works and make purposeful improvements. Each test helps you choose how best to express your ideas.
AO3 & AO4 — Capture your thinking. Make it personal.
AO3: Record and reflect
Use drawing, photographs and written notes to capture observations and explain your thinking as your work develops. Record discoveries, decisions and possible changes so that your creative journey is visible.
AO4: Create a personal response
Bring your research, experiments and observations together in work that communicates your intentions. Make thoughtful choices about colour, composition, form and materials to create a response that feels personal and meaningful.
