You may have noticed on social media the on-going work Jessica Wyatt is completing with the University of Lincoln in their new pharmacology school. Work with our three sponsors, (Siemens, Lincoln College and Lincoln University) is vital to the rich experience our students enjoy. This is complemented by a close relationship with the RAF amongst others and we are delighted that the construction company, Willmott Dixon, who was responsible for our building, won first prize at a recent construction awards’ dinner. The project managers visited the college last week and remarked on how well students and staff are looking after the building. They have offered to deliver talks to students on the cantilever method used to add the new wing to the site: another way we use industry to contextualise learning. This close relationship with employers sets us apart from other schools, providing a wealth of opportunities for work experience as well as project-based learning. The UTC does not suit all students’ career plans and we pride ourselves on ensuring they get impartial advice to achieve their potential. Thus we are delighted that Hannah Watt has been offered a sixth form place at Welbeck to pursue her personal dream. One of the pleasures of teaching is the reward of inspiring students. The Mathematics Department are extremely proud of Toby Reichelt who has been awarded a Future Teaching Scholarship in order to pursue his interest, and excellence, in Mathematics.

There is a short break coming up, starting at the end of the school day on Friday 10 February, with school recommencing on Monday 20 February. As ever, please do contact me if you have any questions. I am still hoping we have an aspiring Capability Brown who would like to advise us on our grounds and if anyone has an old motorbike in their garage they would like to donate, the Engineering department would love to hear from them.

Lincoln UTC pushes the boundaries. Next week we hear from Professor Lord: "We are living longer and 1 in 4 children born today can expect to live to be 100. This would be good news if it were not for the fact that old age is accompanied by increased illness. Professor Lord will describe in particular how the immune system declines with age making older adults more susceptible to infection and cancer. She will also discuss how this can be overcome to improve health in old age."

You may have heard that a recent review into Government spending has resulted in all UTCs receiving additional support during their ‘start-up’ years. This is a positive and constructive move which reflects the confidence the Government has in the unique education UTCs provide. On Monday 23 January the Prime minister announced an initiative headlining the value of technical and STEM education. We see this as an endorsement of everything we do at Lincoln UTC as we prepare students for employment in these industries so vital to economic growth.
